Originally, the new coin-designed by Chief Engraver, Gasparro-featured a bust of Liberty on the obverse, and the reverse depicted a soaring eagle. The coin was largely anticipated to be a hit, the Treasury had nearly unanimous support for the new coin from the Mint, and from the vending machine industry, which was a powerful voice that affected the Mint. In 1976, no legislation had yet been introduced for the coinīut the Mint began to prepare for the new coin, which would be smaller than the previous large dollar. The reverse of the coin features an adaptation of the Apollo 11 insignia and depicts an American Eagle landing on the moon. This dollar was a replacement for the large Eiesenhower dollar. The obverse (front) of the coin features a portrait of social reformer in the women’s suffrage movement, and women’s rights activist Susan B. The coin was minted from 1979-1981, and again briefly in 1999. Anthony dollar was first issued in the year 1979, it was the first circulating coin to feature a real woman, and not a fictional portrayal of Lady Liberty.
